Summer Body Check-In: What Is Your Body Asking For Right Now

Hint: If you said more downtime, you're on the right track
Every summer, the noise gets louder. “Lose the mom bod.” “Get your pre-baby body back.” “Bikini ready in six weeks.” “Drop the weight before vacation.” It shows up in ads, social posts, wellness programs, and casual comments that may seem harmless on the surface but carry a familiar message underneath: your body is a project, and summer is the deadline (instead of how I like to think about—your body serves a purpose and that purpose is to help keep everyone else going).
For so many women, the season that is supposed to feel lighter and fun starts to feel like a performance review. Suddenly, getting dressed, going to the pool, taking family photos, packing for vacation, or simply being seen can come with pressure. There is this unspoken idea that you have to fix, shrink, tone, or reclaim your body before you are allowed to fully enjoy your life.
This is not that kind of check-in. This is not about punishing your body into a smaller version of itself. It is not about “getting back” to who you were before pregnancy, stress, aging, caregiving, career demands, hormonal changes, or just life. This is about listening to the body you have right now and asking what it may be trying to tell you.

Your Body Is Always Communicating
Your body is always communicating. It speaks through your energy, hunger, mood, sleep, cravings, digestion, cycle, strength, stress, patience, and even the moments when you feel completely disconnected from yourself. The goal is not to judge those signals. The goal is to notice them before your body has to get louder.
For many women, especially mothers, summer can bring up complicated feelings. There may be joy, sunshine, travel, and more time outside, but there can also be comparison, pressure, discomfort, and the constant background noise of “should.” I should look different by now. I should have more energy. I should be able to do it all. I should not feel this tired. I should be more grateful. I should be fine.
But “should” is rarely where real wellness begins. A better question is: What is my body asking for right now?
Not what diet culture says you need. Not what worked ten years ago. Not what someone on the internet is selling. Not what your old jeans, your social feed, or someone else’s routine is suggesting. What is your body asking for today?
The Body Check-in We All Need
Maybe your body is asking for more protein, not another skipped meal. Maybe it is asking for water before coffee, a walk instead of a punishing workout, strength training that helps you feel capable, or more sleep instead of another late-night scroll. Maybe it is asking for fewer commitments, deeper breathing, better boundaries, or a doctor’s appointment you have been putting off. Maybe it is asking you to stop talking to it like it has failed you.
A body check-in is not about criticism. It is about information. Low energy is information. Bloating is information. Mood swings, brain fog, cravings, disrupted sleep, and feeling “off” are all information. None of these automatically mean something is wrong with you, but they may be signs that something needs attention.
The issue is that many women have been trained to override their bodies instead of simply listening to them. Yes, I did say simply.
Curious if any of these sound familiar like they do for me....
Hungry? Drink more water.
Tired? Push harder.
Stressed? Keep going.
Uncomfortable? Hide it.
Burned out? Be grateful.
Changing body? Fix it fast.
That strategy is not sustainable. At some point, the body gets louder. Fatigue becomes exhaustion. Tension becomes pain. Irritability becomes burnout. Symptoms that were easy to dismiss become harder to ignore. Listening early is not weakness. It is prevention. It is care. It is basic maintenance for the only body carrying you through every role, responsibility, relationship, and season of your life.
Summer Wellness Does Not Have to Be Extreme
The wellness industry loves a dramatic reset, doesn’t it? Thirty days. Six weeks. Total transformation. No excuses. But most women do not need another extreme plan. They need something that actually works inside real life. Starting with one simple move a day and one mental reset is a good start because we all know starting is more than half the battle, right?.
If that sounds good to you, try my 5 Day Core & Calm Challenge . The 5-Day Core & Calm Challenge is a gentle reset designed for moms who want to feel stronger, calmer, and more connected to their bodies without burnout. Hopefully that feels doable for you and you enjoy it!
A summer body check-in can be simple and practical. Here’s a checklist I use that helps me gauge where I’m at.
Start by asking yourself how your energy feels when you wake up. Notice whether you are eating enough to support your day or just grabbing bites between everyone else’s needs.
Pay attention to whether movement leaves you feeling better or more depleted. This is a big one for more because sometimes I push myself to do a workout when I’m tired when walking with my dog Winnie would be better for my mind and body.
Be honest about your sleep, hydration, stress, and the symptoms you may have been normalizing for too long. Then ask the most important question: What would support feel like this week?
Your answers might be more consistency, or more flexibility. It might be more nourishment, rest, movement, connection, or a break from the constant pressure to improve yourself.
Sometimes the most powerful shift is not changing your body. It is changing the way you relate to it.
You Are Allowed to Enjoy the Season Now
You are allowed to enjoy the season now. You do not have to earn the pool day. You do not have to lose weight before wearing shorts. You do not have to look a certain way to be in the photo.
That does not mean ignoring your health. It means approaching your health with respect instead of shame. There is a real difference between wanting to feel stronger, healthier, more energized, and more connected — and believing you are not allowed to feel good until you look different. One is care. The other is control. Your body knows the difference.
A Better Check-In
This week, before you jump to a fix, a restriction, a comparison, or a plan that makes you feel like a problem, pause… ask what your body is actually trying to say. Maybe the answer is simple:
I need breakfast.
I need sleep.
I need a walk.
I need help.
I need labs.
I need to stop scrolling.
That is the real summer body check-in. Not “How do I look?” but “How am I feeling?” Not “What do I need to fix?” but “What do I need to support?” Not “How do I get my old body back?” but “How do I care for the body I have right now?”
Because if you listen, your body is asking you to partner with it. And that partnership may be the most powerful wellness move you make all summer.
